Fifty Years of Rock, a traveling art exhibit organized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, is at Lynchburg College until Dec. 13. The exhibit features a collection of vintage posters and instruments and is on display in the Daura Art Gallery.
The display features famous posters of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists including Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Ray Charles.
Junior art minor, Alicia Garofalo, said she enjoyed the exhibit because it enabled her to see what rock was like when her parents and grandparents were growing up.
"The 50 Years of Rock exhibit was a great way to see how music and the marketing for the music has changed over the years. There are posters on display from when my parents and even when my grandparents were my age, which is cool," Garofolo said.
The 20 posters displayed in Daura include a Beatles Poster from 1966, Jimi Hendrix from 1968, Ike and Tina Turner and James Brown and a poster of the Ramones, who in 2002 were the first punk/new wave group inducted into the hall of fame. The Clash, Grateful Dead, Madonna and Alanis Morissette are also featured.
Integrated with the posters are three guitars, including a Gibson electric guitar owned by Lester Wiliam Polsfuss "Les Paul" from around 1970. Polsfuss was an American Jazz and country guitarist credited with creating overdubbing, delay effects and other rock sound advancements.
"The artists within this exhibit, 50 years of Rock 'n Roll, share the common experience of grabbing hold of the best of those who came before them and the readily stepping through the doors opened to them by their deepest influence," according to the display.
Correlating with the theme of rock and roll, there is an upcoming event of the showing of the original 1970 documentary, "Woodstock" held Thursday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Daura Gallery. Admission is free for students, faculty and the general public. Also, Dr. Mike Santos will present, "The British are Coming! The Rock Invasion of the 1960s," Sunday Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Daura Gallery.
